In order to allow resumption of formal group activities, all attendees (members and guests) must be fully vaccinated (received all recommended doses in primary series Covid-19 vaccine) and be up to date with a booster dose.
Monthly club meetings are typically held at 6:00 pm the fourth Thursday at Seaman’s Lodge in Pioneer Park, 427 Nimrod Street, Nevada City. Offsite events include the May annual picnic and our August Rescue Clinic.
These gatherings are social, recreational, and informational in nature. Presentations offer information associated with the sport of paddling through speakers, videos, and slideshows. The meeting often includes a potluck dinner. Details will be emailed to our members and can also be found in our newsletter.
If you are not a member and wish to check us out, you are invited to join us. Contact Susan Rossman, Membership Chair at email@example.com.

Thursday, June 23: Dick Penniman will present a slide show and narrative of his kayak trip in Freycinet National Park in Tasmania in 1997. Freycinet is a coastal marine park on the Tasman Sea in southern Tasmania. It boasts clear, cold water rimmed by pink granite formations and white beaches that offer a spectacular setting for a short kayak adventure. Dick found himself with several days of free time after completing some work in Melbourne. He had read about Freycinet National Park and found an adventure-travel agent in town that set him up with a group already planning to be boating in the park and willing to let him join them. It was only after he was picked up by the leader of the group at the airport in Hobart and on his way to put-in that he learned that these were no ordinary kayakers.
Thursday, August 25: Mark your Calendar! We are planning our annual SNCKC Rescue Clinic at Rollins Lake. Thomas Schuebel, certified Kayak Instructor and honorary SNCKC member, will lead us in assisted and self-rescue techniques demonstration and practice. Every kayak and canoe paddler needs to know and practice these methods. Participation in this clinic is highly recommended at least once every year. Click on the Resources tab on this website to check out the excellent Rescue Clinic narrative and photos by Gary Moon. Also visit Coach’s Corner by Chris Crain for videos of rescue techniques and more.
Past Meetings and Events
Thursday, April 28: Gary Moon presented his kayaking experience at Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota last summer. Having worked there in 1983 and 1984, Gary knew Voyageurs was kayak heaven because of its large peaceful lakes, mostly undeveloped shorelines, many islands, and incomparable scenery.
Thursday, March 24: Chris Crain’s program Kayaking Through the Ages presented an engaging history of kayaking, complete with historic reconstruction examples, linking past to present.
Thursday, October 28: British Pub Quiz Night with June Anderson. In most British pubs it’s a tradition to have a Quiz Night once a week. The first SNCKC quiz night was in 2013 and it was time for another fun evening of kayak-related trivia! Hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next one.
